New Google Homepage?

Will this be Google’s new homepage?

Hope not.

Coin Slot via Flickr [CC License] Not exactly sophisticated Photoshopping, but maybe it’ll get me some more work.

BTW: I didn’t realize that “coin slot” had other connotations, but I guess it does. Shows how old I am I guess.

Updated: Some updates indicate that both Verizon and Google deny that any net neutrality agreements have been made. I’m still skeptical, but that’s me. I think it’s worth following anyhoo.

Wordpress Plugin Installation For Multiple Websites

I was recently at a session at Wordcamp Boulder and there was a question asked on what a good way to install plugins on multiple blogs.  I believe the question was related to the situation where you have Blog A where you have tested and installed a bunch of plugins and you have things working the way you like them and you wish to move all of these same plugins to Blog B which is a new install, or something similar.

I recommend a couple of ways which can save you boatloads of time when installing WordPress Plugins across multiple websites. It just depends on how much work you want to do.

Removing Comments Are Closed From Thesis Pages

It seems lots of people find this site searching for how to remove the closed comment text at the bottom of Pages in Thesis. (If that’s why you’re here, welcome!)

I can’t blame people for wanting to get rid of it, it can be annoying if you want to simply creating a website that contains some pages without having comments on them, but want to retain commenting on some pages. I don’t exactly need comments on my About or Contact page do I, but I might in other locations.

I had previously written about how to remove the default Comments Are Closed text manually (touching template code, horror!) I recently got a comment on the post asking how to do it in version 1.7 and beyond. I guess I had written the original post so long ago I forgot to update it. So if you’re still searching for this, I have some good news.

Wordcamp Boulder 2010 Review

To say I rely on WordPress is an understatement. So when I found out that there would be a Wordcamp in Boulder this year, I was pretty excited.

The event was volunteer run so the cost was only $35.00 which seemed cheap compared to other tech conferences which can run in the hundreds to thousands of dollars per ticket.  Plus you get a free t-shirt. :)

Article Writing Services Lessons Learned

If links and tweets are the  currency of the web, original content would be the durable goods.  You need unique content updated frequently which will in turn get linked to in order to get and retain top ranking for keywords.

Aside from frequently coming up with topics to write about, it is a lot of work writing content and doing it daily proves to be even more challenging. But as always there are services which will come to the rescue to take the labor out of writing articles.

Import Word Documents into Pages on the iPad

Creating Content On Your iPad

I use my iPad as a media consumption device (mmm, media nom nom), but I also think it can be a powerful way to create content without being limited by the size and battery life of a laptop.  [I recommend using either the wireless keyboard or the keyboard doc for easier typing though.]

With that in mind, if you’ve ever wanted to edit a Word document on your iPad, you may have discovered there’s not a simple way to import files directly into Pages. But here is a method I’ve been using.

Kick Ass Career

Good article on IWillTeachYouToBeRich.com (link) about how people often think their dream job is going to find them rather than the other way around.

I’m always looking for motivational quotes and I thought these were good ones to reflect on and keep motivated.

You don’t wait for something to happen, you get off your ass and do it.

I guess this is like the Nike thing “Just Do It” but a little more directed. Ramit’s great at not being subtle, you never wonder what he means. ;)

My favorite was the following snippet:

[Having credentials] is one of the biggest mistakes people make when pursuing their passions: thinking that a mythical credential will REALLY help them, when actually getting experience is almost always a better move. People don’t like hearing this, though, because it reduces the magic of the silver bullet of credentials and degrees.)

Emphasis is mine. I’ve fallen into this trap in the past and think it is so well said.  Unfortunately the universities help fuel this perception, since they need people to believe this in order to survive.

What would happen if people stopped believing this?

Time to get off my ass and go do something.

5 Lessons Porn Spammers Have Taught Me About Email Marketing

I routinely check my spam folder for email incorrectly caught as junk. (It’s getting rarer these days, but you never know.) I usually have a good time reading the subject headlines because they are so creative, yet so tacky. The off-target techniques they use to entice me to open their junk are so desperate, you just have to laugh. I give them credit for their determination, even if it’s wholly wasted.

Today I decided to analyze a few of these emails to try and figure out the common threads of what they do right and, more often, wrong which cause them to die unread. I wanted to find techniques I could use to improve my own marketing skills as a result.

It turns out there are indeed some lessons I can apply to my own email marketing to improve the quality of my mailing lists.

Lifesaving tips for upgrading to Wordpress 3.0

The latest and greatest WordPress 3.0 is out today. Woo hoo! Thelonious is it’s name, after one of my (and presumably Matt’s) favorite jazz pianists

The WordPress site servers must have been maxed out harder than AT&Ts during the iPhone debacle last week all with the excited bloggers and web geeks running to upgrade their site. This was a major release containing “1,217 bug fixes and feature enhancements” and adding a ton of new features. Even with the community’s extensive release-candidate testing, any upgrade comes with the possibility of issues, possibly nasty ones, cropping up.

In spite of the ease of install touted in the official release announcement post there are a few things to remember when doing any site upgrade. So, just as a reminder here are a few things you should be doing before you upgrade.

Add only to post using Thesis

I get a lot of questions about how to add theme content to only single posts. (Versus pages, the home page, etc.)

Again, I’m using the Thesis theme framework on most of my websites and will go over how to bend Thesis to your will and also I’ll give an easy way to add to any theme, Thesis or not.

I’ll give two simple ways to do this (using custom_functions.php and also with the OpenHook plugin). I’ll even throw in a bonus for people using any theme at all.
